Turkey launches visa for digital nomads: remote work opportunities
In April 2024, Turkey announced the introduction of a new visa for digital nomads that will be effective from October 1, 2024. This program was developed by the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), which reports to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. At the moment, the opportunity to apply for a special certificate confirming the foreigner's status as a digital nomad is already available.
The goal of the program is to attract freelancers from abroad by offering them comfortable working conditions and a variety of cultural events in cities such as Istanbul, Dalaman (Mugla province) and Izmir. According to Turkish authorities, these regions offer ideal opportunities for remote work and cultural tourism.
Citizens of the following countries can use the new visa:
To apply for a visa, applicants must meet a number of requirements:
- Age between 21 and 55 years old;
- Availability of an employment contract if the applicant works for a company (excluding companies registered in Turkey), or availability of a contract if the applicant is self-employed (also excluding Turkish companies);
- Minimum income of $3000 per month or $36000 per year;
- Availability of higher education.
The visa application process starts by obtaining a “digital nomad” certificate on the Turkish Ministry of Culture portal. This certificate enables you to apply for a visa at a Turkish consulate or visa center.
It is important to note that digital nomads will be considered full tax residents of Turkey and will be taxed at standard tax rates, unlike holders of residence permits obtained on the basis of rental accommodation.
