What to visit in Uzbekistan

Registan

The central square of Samarkand, around which the main sights of the city are concentrated. The name translates as "sandy place" and refers to the fact that the square was formerly a desert.

Registan is surrounded by three madrassas (Islamic religious educational institutions) - Ulugbek, Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori, built in the 14th-17th centuries. Each madrasah is a harmonious architectural complex with aivans, portals, minarets and courtyards. Ulugbek Madrassah (1417-1420) is the oldest on the square and is characterized by graceful proportions and decoration. Sher-Dor Madrasah (1636-1637) impresses with its magnificent main portal decorated with mosaics. Tillya-Kori (1647-1660) is the largest, distinguished by two high minarets on the sides of the entrance.

Registan is a symbol of the architectural grandeur of Central Asia. It is one of the most popular places in Samarkand, which is a must-visit for all tourists.

Ichan-Kala

It is an ancient citadel of the city of Khiva, surrounded by powerful walls more than 10 meters high. It is a whole architectural complex included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On the territory of Ichan-Kala there is Kunya-Ark - the medieval residence of the rulers of Khiva, rising on a high platform. Inside the mausoleum is a cathedral tomb decorated with decorative tiles and reliefs depicting lions, dragons and griffins. This historical monument was inspired by the mausoleum of Alexander the Great in Alexandria and came to symbolize the greatness of the Timurid dynasty.
