Family reunification and citizenship in Germany: an overview of the new immigration rules

Germany is preparing to introduce significant changes to its immigration legislation aimed at tightening controls on migration flows and raising the requirements for obtaining citizenship.

Under the new rules, migrants with subsidiary protection status will temporarily lose the right to reunite with their families for up to two years. Unlike recognized refugees, these individuals are protected from deportation due to serious threats in their countries, but do not have refugee status under the Geneva Convention. This restriction could make it more difficult to maintain family ties and affect migrants' plans for the future.

In addition, the minimum residence period for applying for citizenship will increase from three to five years. Applicants will now have to prove not only financial stability and official employment, but also a high level of German language proficiency.

The authorities explain these measures as necessary to reduce the burden on the country's social and infrastructure systems associated with the reception and integration of migrants. The new rules will create additional obstacles for those seeking to build a life in Germany.

The changes are expected to be formally approved before the start of the summer holidays in July 2025. During this time, migrants and legal residents will have to adapt to stricter requirements and longer processing times for their cases.
