Places worth visiting in Belarus

Mir castle

Mir castle

One of the landmarks of Belarus is located 100 kilometers from Minsk. The monumental building was erected in the 16th century by the magnate and statesman of the Principality of Lithuania Yuri Ilyinich. The castle changed many owners: among them were Radziwill, Wittgenstein, Svyatopolk-Mirsky. Externally, the building resembles the castles-monasteries of Northern Poland and the Baltic States, and its architecture combines Gothic with Rococo and Renaissance. The most attentive visitors can notice on the red bricks the stamps of the neighborhood workshops that participated in the construction.

One of the wonders of the castle is the mosaic image of Jesus Christ on the facade of the chapel, which became the burial vault of the Svyatopolk-Mirsky family. The eyes of the Savior will always be fixed on the beholder, no matter where the person is. There are many legends connected with the Mir Castle. According to one of them, there is a stone in the southern wall of the structure that can cure eye diseases.

Nyasvizh castle

Nyasvizh castle

Another one of the most visited palaces in Belarus. The foundation of one of the most interesting sights in Belarus, which is worth visiting, was laid by Nikolai Radziwill "Orphan" - an outstanding statesman and military figure of the Principality of Lithuania. The construction of the castle was carried out from the XVI to XIX centuries, so the architectural appearance of the building combines several styles: from medieval architecture to classicism. In 2002 the castle was badly damaged by fire. Now its halls have been restored to their original 19th century appearance. In the castle you can visit the ornate White Hall, reminiscent of an ancient temple with marble columns, or linger in the Fireplace Hall, studying the portraits and wooden decorations on the walls.

In the immediate vicinity of the castle is the Church of God's Body, which is the family tomb of the Radziwill family. The basilica in the shape of a Latin cross with Baroque elements on the facade attracts history buffs.

Kossovo palace Belarus

Puslowski palace in Kossovo

The castle in Kossovo, built in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, is less known outside Belarus, but it is still of interest to tourists. The castle is currently under restoration, but the surrounding park complex is an ideal place for walks and photo shoots.

On the territory of the castle there is a hotel and a restaurant, as well as a museum-mansion of the famous Polish statesman Tadeusz Kosciuszko. The museum features a collection of rare documents and personal belongings of the owner.

Rumyantsev-paskevich Palace in Gomel

Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace in Gomel

The Rumyantsev Palace is one of the most significant and beautiful monuments of Gomel. The construction of this majestic building in the style of Russian classicism began in 1777 on the land given to commander Peter Rumyantsev by Catherine the Great. The architects drew inspiration from the Villa Rotonda, located on a hilltop in the Italian city of Vicenza. In 1834 the Rumyantsev Palace was bought by the famous Russian commander Ivan Paskevich, whose property it remained until the revolution.

The heart of the palace is the magnificent Hall of Columns, where balls and receptions were held. Much attention should be paid to the arches decorated with elegant female sculptures, each symbolizing one of the seasons. Golden dishes and Saxon porcelain are presented in the dining room of the Princes Paskevich, and on the veranda, which offers a picturesque view of the Sozh River, it is worth paying attention to the preserved vases from 1840. The beautiful palace and its surroundings are one of the main attractions of Gomel.
