Visa to Tanzania

Visa policy plays an important role in regulating the entry and stay of foreign nationals in Tanzania by determining the types of visas available and the requirements for obtaining them. Whether a visa is required for entry depends on the nationality of the traveler, as well as the purpose and planned length of stay.

Do I need a visa to Tanzania?

For citizens of more than 60 countries, it is possible to enter without a visa for up to 90 days (3 months). This is especially convenient for short trips and avoids unnecessary formalities. However, for all other foreign citizens a visa is a mandatory condition.

The modern approach to issuing a visa to Tanzania also includes an electronic visa. This method allows you to avoid visiting Tanzanian diplomatic missions or waiting in line at the border. Online visa application is available to citizens of more than 150 countries, making the process of obtaining an entry permit much easier and faster.

Those who are unable to obtain an e-visa should contact the nearest Tanzanian consulate to apply for a visa in person. It is important to pre-agree an appointment and specify the type of visa corresponding to the purpose of stay (tourist, business, work or study).

It should be noted that there are currently no prohibitions on the entry of foreign citizens to Tanzania. An important condition for all visitors is the availability of a return ticket at the time of entry into the country.

It is important to emphasize that Tanzania's visa policy also applies to the island of Zanzibar, which gives visa holders the opportunity to travel both on the mainland and on the island of Zanzibar, enjoying the diversity and beauty of these unique places.

Careful adherence to visa rules and procedures will allow you to fully enjoy your stay in Tanzania and discover all its splendor and adventure.

Important Notice:

It should be emphasized that the possession of a visa is not a final security for entry into the United Republic of Tanzania. The immigration officer at the point of entry may decide to exclude the visa holder from entry if he/she is satisfied that it is not possible to comply with the requirements of the immigration service or if the presence of the individual or visitors in the United Republic of Tanzania is likely to violate the national interest.
In addition, visitors MUST present proof of their return ticket upon arrival.

There are six types of visas valid for entry into Tanzania:

Ordinary Visa (Single Entry Visa)

Ordinary Visa (Single Entry Visa) - Issued to a foreign national for the purpose of visit, tourism, recreation, conference attendance, humanitarian and charitable activities, family visit, medical treatment or other purposes as may be determined by the issuing authority. Multiple entry visa

A multiple-entry visa may be issued to U.S. citizens who wish to visit Tanzania for purposes such as vacation/tourism, visiting friends and relatives, or attending a conference, and who need to visit more than once. U.S. passport holders who are visiting Tanzania for tourism or recreation must also apply for a multiple-entry visa, even if they plan to come only once.

U.S. citizens planning to come for business travel are advised to read the Business Visa section above.

Multiple-entry visas may also be issued to directors of companies incorporated in Tanzania but residing outside of Tanzania, participants in meetings and conferences, and spouses of Tanzanians/residents or government consuls.

Transit travel

Foreign nationals traveling through Tanzania to another destination may be issued a transit visa for a period not exceeding 7 days. Proof of visa in the destination country and/or a ticket to continue traveling may be required when applying for the visa.

Please note: The transit visa is for transit travel through Tanzania only and cannot be used for tourist purposes.

This category of visa can be issued to holders of diplomatic, official or service passport or travel document of recognized international organizations who are on duty as well as their dependents.
