Taiwan extends Digital Nomad Visa: new prospects for remote workers
Taiwan is significantly extending the terms and conditions of its Digital Nomad Visa programme as part of its efforts to actively attract expatriate workers. The National Development Council (NDC) has announced the extension of the Digital Nomad Visa to one year, allowing visitors to not only live in Taiwan but also legally work for overseas companies. These changes reflect Taiwan's commitment to strengthening the economy through supporting the innovative and creative potential of the international community of professionals.
The Digital Nomad Visa programme now also covers Japan and South Korea. By signing memoranda of co-operation with the Japanese cities of Fukuoka and Osaka, as well as South Korea, Digital Nomads will be able to move between these countries to develop their projects and expand their network of business contacts.
Digital Nomad Visa - the road to new opportunities in Taiwan
The new Digital Nomad Visa programme confirms Taiwan's willingness to offer unique conditions for professionals working remotely. Previously, foreign freelancers could stay in Taiwan for up to three months on a tourist visa, but extending the period to a year opens up more opportunities for long-term work and comfortable living in the country.
The NDC predicts the number of digital nomads in the world will reach 40 million by 2030. Taiwan plans to attract more than 100,000 foreign professionals by 2028, creating an environment for them to grow professionally. Additionally, NDC Minister Paul Liu noted that after one year in Taiwan, Digital Nomad Visa holders will be able to qualify for a ‘Golden Employment Card,’ which will open up access to formal employment or opportunities to set up their own businesses.
Local governments such as Hualien, Tainan, Tainan, Taidong and Pingdong are keen to develop infrastructure for professionals in this field, expecting to actively attract talent that can contribute to the country's economy.
