New visa rules: interview exemption for US nonimmigrant visas from March 2025

24.02.2025
Manhattan, New York, United States of America

The U.S. Department of State is introducing new rules regarding interview waivers for nonimmigrant visa applicants. These changes are intended to simplify the visa application process and reduce waiting times.

Consular officers can now exempt the following categories from the in-person interview starting March 2025:

  • Diplomatic and official visas: A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding accompanying persons, servants and personal employees of accredited persons).
  • International organization visas: G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, NATO-1 TO NATO-6.
  • TECRO E-1 visa.

To receive an interview exemption, applicants must meet certain conditions:

  • Must have a previously issued visa of the same category that has expired less than 12 months prior to filing a new application. This greatly simplifies the process compared to the previous requirement of 48 months.
  • Apply in your country of citizenship or permanent residence.
  • Not have had visa denials in the past.
  • Not be under a ground of ineligibility.

After completing the online application and paying the visa fee, the system will automatically determine eligibility for an interview exemption. If the applicant qualifies, he or she will be able to avoid an in-person interview.

However, consular officers may, at their discretion, require in-person interviews depending on the particular situation or local conditions. We advise all applicants to closely monitor updates to visa requirements and procedures.
