New rules for visa-free transit in China come into effect from December 2024
China has announced an update to its visa-free transit policy, marking a significant step in the country's revitalization of its tourism sector. The new initiative aims to boost both tourism and business activity, allowing foreign nationals to delve deeper into China's rich culture and enjoy the sights during their stopovers. Citizens from 54 countries, including countries in Europe, the US, the UK, Canada and Russia, can now take advantage of the new visa-free transit options.
According to the latest changes introduced by China's National Immigration Administration (NIA), the length of stay for foreign nationals eligible for visa-free transit has been increased to 240 hours (10 days), significantly exceeding the previous limit of 144 hours. The extended stay provides travelers with more time to explore China without the need for a transit visa.
In addition, 21 new entry and exit points have been added to the list of permitted zones for transit travelers. Citizens from 54 countries can now enter China without a visa through one of 60 open ports located in 24 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
However, to take advantage of the visa-free transit regime, travelers must meet several conditions: hold a valid passport, be en route to a third country or region with confirmed tickets for an onward flight, and arrive and depart through one of the approved ports. These requirements will help ensure an orderly and safe transit process for all travelers, opening up new opportunities to experience China's unique culture.
The relaxation of visa requirements greatly simplifies the process of traveling in China, opening up a unique opportunity for travelers to explore the country while transiting to a third country.
