New opportunities in the Express Entry program for skilled tradespeople in Canada

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced significant changes for 2025 to the Express Entry program. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a new Education category, which includes five teaching-related occupations. Specifically, this category includes:
- Elementary and middle school teaching assistants
- Instructors for people with disabilities
- Teachers and assistants of preschoolers
- Elementary school and kindergarten teachers
- Middle school teachers
This strategic addition is driven by the growing student population in Canada and the increasing need for qualified educators. Priority will be given to candidates with French language proficiency, skills and experience in priority sectors.
In addition, IRCC has removed the Transportation category from the selection process and expanded the Health Care category to include social service occupations. The category now includes family physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists and chiropractors. This expansion aims to address pressing health issues and support the community.
For 2025, IRCC maintains key categories in the Express Entry program, including occupations in health and human services, agriculture and agri-food occupations, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), trades (with the addition of new occupations in construction) and education. Of all categories, occupations in health and social services, trades and education will be prioritized for Invitation to Apply (ITA), reflecting the current needs of the Canadian labour market and strategic goals to attract skilled workers in critical areas.
The new changes to the Express Entry program open new horizons for skilled workers looking to build a career in Canada.
