Canada sets new rules for processing and issuing temporary resident visas for tourists
As part of the new 2025 Migration Plan, Canada is introducing new requirements for determining the duration of temporary stay visas for foreign nationals who require a valid visa to visit the country. It should be noted that this update does not affect previously issued visas, but it will affect all new applications submitted to IRCC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada).
The update gives visa officers more discretion in deciding whether to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, as well as in determining the duration of the visa. The previous standard of issuing multiple-entry visas with a maximum validity of 10 years no longer applies; officers will now assess each application on a case-by-case basis.
The duration of the visa will be determined based on the personal circumstances and reasons why the applicant plans to enter Canada. The visa officer will take into consideration not only the reason for your entry, but also your connection to your home country and your financial ability. The visa may be granted for a shorter period of time, based on the documents provided and the information set out in the visa file.
There are various factors that are taken into consideration and may affect the decision on the duration of the temporary residence visa. These include your health status and certain medical conditions, your travel history and previous visas issued to you by Canada or any other country, your compliance with the visa regulations and the absence of any irregularities.
This initiative by the Canadian government and immigration department is aimed at creating a comfortable living environment for both citizens and visitors, as well as streamlining the temporary resident program for foreign nationals.
