Starting in May 2025, Canada is introducing new rules for visitor visas

Starting May 7, 2025, Canada is introducing updated rules for obtaining visitor visas aimed at simplifying and structuring the process for travelers. These changes will help improve entry controls and make travel to the country more convenient.
Travelers are strongly advised to check in advance whether they require a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). The choice of document depends on a number of factors, including nationality, type of passport (regular or diplomatic), country of citizenship, and mode of transportation—air, land, or sea.
Under the new rules, visitor visas will be issued for three purposes:
- Tourism and family visits.
- Participation in short-term educational programs and conferences.
- Transit through Canada to other countries.
The standard length of stay for a temporary resident visa (TRV) is six months per entry. However, border services reserve the right to set individual lengths of stay, which may vary.
Travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with visa requirements in advance and plan their trips in accordance with the new rules to ensure a comfortable and safe stay in Canada.
