Do you need an eVisa for Thailand?
In 2018, Thai authorities introduced a new visa program that allows applicants to obtain e-visas exclusively online, eliminating the need to visit an embassy or consulate to apply in person or wait in line to receive a visa on arrival.
Today, representatives from more than 20 countries must obtain the appropriate eVisa to enter Thailand. Thailand eVisa online visa Thailand eVisa provides different categories of visas to enter the country. The validity and length of stay depends on the type of eVisa.
Categories of eVisas to Thailand
Tourist eVisa - issued for the following purposes:
- Tourism: to stay in the country for the purpose of vacation, sightseeing and experiencing the culture of Thailand;
- family visit: for a short-term stay with family living in Thailand;
- for medical treatment: for citizens who plan to receive medical care or treatment in medical institutions of Thailand (examination, consultations, surgery, rehabilitation);
- MICE participants: participants of conferences, seminars, exhibitions and other events within the MICE industry (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) supported by TCEB (Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau).
Additional Documents:
- Proof of travel arrangements: round trip airfare and hotel or other accommodation booking,
- Proof of financial resources,
- Proof of current residence.
Visa validity period: 3 months or 6 months
Period of stay: not more than 60 days
Transit eVisa is issued for the following purposes:
- for transit through Thailand if the stopover is more than 12 hours (enter the destination country or return to your home country):
- air ticket to the destination country,
- visa or travel document to the country of destination,
- proof of financial means
- for participation in sports events (sportsmen, sportswomen), duration of stay not exceeding one month:
- proof of financial means
- may be issued to the person in charge or crew of a vehicle arriving at a port, station or various areas of Thailand:
- letter of invitation or letter of confirmation of participation in sports activities in Thailand,
- proof of financial means
Visa validity period: 3 months
Period of stay: not more than 30 days
A non-immigrant eVisa B is issued for the following purposes:
- To carry out business activities:
- An invitation from a partner company in Thailand,
- a letter stating the purpose of the visit
- for employment under a labor contract:
- work permit from the Ministry of Labor,
- employment contract,
- education documents and letters of recommendation
- for an extracurricular internship:
- internship documents,
- business registration and employer's license in Thailand.
Visa validity period: Single entry visa - 3 months. Multiple-entry visa - from three months to one year
Period of stay: not more than 90 days unless otherwise specified by the immigration office.
Non-immigration eVisa IB is issued to study the local market, invest in a company or to work in a company that is registered with BOI.

Period of stay: not more than 90 days, unless otherwise specified by the immigration office.
The non-immigrant eVisa ED is a student visa and is issued for the following purposes:
- for school enrollment:
- school enrollment confirmation letter,
- school registration certificate,
- authorization from the Ministry of Education.
- for education in a higher education institution (university or college):
- Confirmation letter of enrollment in a university,
- university registration certificate,
- academic certificate on the previous level of education.
- or internship (training practice):
- internship confirmation letter from the company,
- internship confirmation letter from the educational institution.
- to attend language courses or trainings and seminars organized by an international organization:
- letter of confirmation of participation in the program from the company.
Visa validity period: 3 months
Period of stay: not more than 90 days, unless otherwise specified by the immigration office.
A non-immigrant eVisa M is issued for the following purposes:
- To work as a film producer (filming movies, commercials):
- Authorization from the Motion Picture Association of Thailand, Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
- To work as a journalist or reporter in Thailand:
- Letter of title and appointment letter from the head of the agency,
- authorization from the Information Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
- certificate of registration of the news agency,
- candidate's resume
Visa validity period: 3 months or one (1) year
Period of stay: not more than 90 days, unless the immigration bureau office specifies another period of stay
Non-immigration eVisa O is for the following foreign nationals:
- for former Thai nationals:
- Proof of Thai citizenship,
- travel booking.
- for Thai national's family (spouse and children):
- proof of financial means,
- proof of kinship
- for volunteers, for volunteer work in Thailand:
- letter of confirmation of volunteer work in Thailand,
- document on registration of a charitable organization
- Pensioners who are 50 years of age or older with a government pension.
Visa validity period: 3 months
Period of stay: not more than 90 days unless otherwise specified by the immigration office.
The non-immigrant eVisa O-A is a long-term visa intended for foreigners aged 50 years and older. When applying for this visa, the foreigner must have permanent residence in the country from which the application is made. No employment is authorized with this visa. It allows the foreigner to reside in the country on a long-term basis and enjoy the benefits provided to its holders.
Prerequisite: every 90 days, a notice of stay must be submitted to the immigration office.

- certificate of no criminal record,
- medical certificate of absence of prohibited diseases (leprosy, tuberculosis, elephantiasis, drug addiction, third stage syphilis),
- medical insurance.
Visa validity period: 1 (one) year
Period of stay: 1 (one) year, after one year, can be extended for another 1 (one) year.
The non-immigrant eVisa O-X is a long-term visa available to citizens of Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America who are 50 years of age or older. However, this visa also applies to the spouse and children (under 20 years of age) of the principal applicant.
Holders of eVisa O-X have the opportunity to engage in volunteer work, purchase a vehicle and condominiums, which adds flexibility and comfort to their life abroad.
Prerequisite: a notice of stay must be submitted to the immigration office every 90 days.
Additional documents:
- three application forms and 3 photographs,
- a certificate of no criminal record,
- medical certificate of absence of prohibited diseases (leprosy, tuberculosis, elephantiasis, drug addiction, third stage of syphilis),
- medical insurance,
- proof of financial means,
- spouse (no age restrictions) must present a copy of the marriage certificate,
- a child under the age of 20 must present a copy of the birth certificate.
Visa validity period: 5 (five) years
Period of stay: 5 (five) years, after five years, can be extended for another 5 (five) years.
If the documents are in foreign languages, they must be translated into Thai. If translated into English, the translation must be notarized by the notary public or the applicant's diplomatic/consular mission.
In order to avoid delays and inconvenience, visa applicants are advised to apply at least 15 working days prior to their intended date of travel to Thailand.
Foreign nationals planning to stay in Thailand longer or if they wish to change their visa type must apply for authorization at the Immigration Bureau Office. Extension of stay as well as change of a particular visa type is at the sole discretion of the Immigration Officer.
To apply for a Thai e-visa, you need to fill out a simple online form by providing your personal, passport and travel details. The following images are required to upload to submit the application:
The applicant's passport must be valid for at least 30 days from the expected date of arrival in Thailand and must have at least one blank page.
Once approved, the electronic visa to Thailand will be sent to the applicant via email. Tourists are advised to print a hard copy of this visa as it may be requested upon arrival.
Those nationals who are not allowed visa-free entry or cannot apply for an e-visa, such as for study or work, need to obtain the appropriate visa through the embassy.

However, it should be noted that the e-visa does not cover entry through sea and land border crossings. Citizens who are eligible for an e-visa are advised to apply for another type of visa through the embassy if they plan to travel to Thailand through a sea or land border crossing.
Please note that as of September 26, 2021, e-visa applicants are no longer required to come in person at the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate to present their passport and original required documents. Once the e-visa application is approved, applicants will be sent a confirmation via email. We recommend that you print out a copy of this e-mail confirmation to present to airline staff and Thai immigration officials for verification during your travel to Thailand.
