Sierra Leone visa

Sierra Leone is a sought-after tourist destination with amazing scenery, beautiful beaches and diverse culture. If you intend to visit this country, you will need to apply for a visa. A Sierra Leone visa is an official authorization to enter and stay in the country for a specific purpose. The Sierra Leone visa process offers convenience as you can apply online or mail your application. There are several types of visas such as tourist, business, work and e-visa. Here are some countries that are exempted from visa requirements in Sierra Leone:

  • Iranian diplomatic and service passport holders do not require a visa to enter the country.
  • Holders of diplomatic, service and public passports of China do not require a visa to enter the country.

There are three options to apply for a Sierra Leone visa: visa on arrival or at an embassy/consulate. The Sierra Leone e-visa allows you to apply online, without visiting an embassy or consulate. This visa allows you to visit the country for tourism, business, academic, religious purposes or to visit family and friends, but does not grant the right to work or reside in the country.

A visa on arrival is only issued at the point of entry before the passenger passes through border control. It only applies to visitors, whether for tourism, business, religion, academic or just a visit to see family and friends. Visa on Arrival does not apply to people who are traveling to the country for other reasons such as work, study, dependents, diplomats etc, anyone traveling for any of these reasons needs to apply for a visa at the nearest Sierra Leone embassy/consulate before traveling.

The visa on arrival is valid for one month but can be extended at the migration office upon arrival in the country. It allows only one entry into the country, i.e. it cannot be used to leave and re-enter the country.

A visa on arrival can be obtained at any of the three main points of entry into the country:

  • Freetown International Airport, Lungi
  • Gendema - border crossing from Liberia to Sierra Leone
  • Gbalamuya - border crossing from Guinea to Sierra Leone
