On May 7, 2025, Turkmenistan officially embarked on the path of digitalization of the visa regime - the country adopted a law on the introduction of the electronic visa system (e-visa). This important change promises to significantly simplify entry for foreign citizens and open new opportunities for travelers and business partners.

The law was signed into law on April 18, 2025. It is based on the desire to make the visa system more accessible and flexible. Key innovations include:

  • The abolition of the mandatory Letter of Invitation (LOI) previously required to obtain a visa;
  • The advent of the online application form - it will now be possible to apply online;
  • Facilitated entry procedures for both tourists and business visitors.

These measures are aimed at expanding tourist flows and strengthening business ties with other countries, as well as at including Turkmenistan in international and regional trade and economic processes.

Despite the entry into force of the law, a number of technical and organizational details have yet to be clarified. In particular:

  • What types of e-visas will be available (tourist, business, etc.);
  • what will be the validity period of the visa;
  • what documents will be required for application and how the process itself will look like.

All these parameters are to be determined by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in the near future.

Until the new system is fully implemented, foreign nationals are advised to continue using traditional methods of obtaining a visa:

  • apply for a visa at Turkmenistan's embassies and consulates;
  • provide an invitation issued and approved by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan;
  • register with the Migration Service within 3 working days after entering the country.
