A new era of visas: Thailand introduces electronic visa applications
Thai Foreign Minister Marita Sangiemphong announced a significant innovation: from January 1, 2025, foreign nationals will be able to apply for all types of visas to Thailand through an electronic system (e-visa). This system will be available at the kingdom's 94 embassies and consulates general around the world.
Variety of visas and ease of application
Foreign nationals wishing to apply for different types of visas - whether tourist, business, student or work visas - will be able to apply through the official website, which is available in 15 languages. To obtain an e-visa, an application form will need to be filled out and scans of the required documents uploaded. Once approved, the visa will be provided in the form of an electronic file that must be saved and presented upon entry into the country.
Simplification of the visa process
The e-visa system is an important update to the visa process in the country, aimed at simplifying and speeding up the visa application process for foreign nationals. The introduction of this system will reduce paperwork and improve the vetting of persons entering Thailand by integrating databases with other government agencies.
Visa-free entry rules will remain in place
It should be noted that the existing visa-free entry policy and the ability to obtain a visa on arrival will remain unchanged. Citizens who are authorized to enter the country visa-free can still enter without a visa for up to 60 days, while citizens of 31 countries will be able to apply for a visa on arrival. However, for those planning an extended stay in Thailand for business or study reasons, it will be necessary to apply through a new electronic system.
