No passport will be needed to enter Singapore
Singapore plans to introduce a passport-free entry system at all entry points into the country to provide faster and more convenient border control for tourists and business travelers. The new system is based on biometrics and will allow entry into the country without a traditional passport, which will reduce waiting times and minimize queues at passport control.
The introduction of this technology is in line with the global trend towards digitalization and increased security at border crossings. The biometric control will include facial and fingerprint scanning and a QR code system at ground control points, providing accurate identification without the need to present paper documents. It is expected that the innovation will first be available for citizens of certain countries and for those who apply for electronic visas.
The system speeds up security checks and improves the travel experience for millions of passengers. However, foreign nationals must still present their passports when entering Singapore if their documents have not previously been registered with the migration service or they are arriving in the country for the first time. Passport-free controls are in place for outbound and repeat travelers. The introduction of the program is planned in stages, starting with passengers from individual countries and e-visa holders.
Two variants of passport-free control are planned, depending on the type of point of entry:
- Air and sea points: Singapore residents and foreign nationals are screened at entry using facial biometrics and iris scanning, without presenting a passport. Passenger data is provided in advance by carriers.
- Ground points: QR code is used as passenger information is not available in advance. QR codes, including group codes, can be saved and reused for future trips if the group composition is the same.
The Singapore government emphasizes that this initiative is aimed at creating a more flexible border control system, corresponding to the country's status as a major transportation hub and tourist center of Asia.
