Significant updates to the student visa in New Zealand

New Zealand has recently introduced significant changes to the student and work visa rules for international students. These changes affect both the duration of study requirements and the conditions for obtaining a work visa after completion of studies.

Under the new rules, in order to qualify for a work visa, students must complete a minimum of 30 weeks of full-time study in an accredited programme. In this case, the time allocated for exam preparation will be counted in the total study weeks, but holiday breaks and time spent on correcting unsatisfactory grades will not be added to the study weeks. This is mandatory for those planning to apply for a New Zealand work visa under the PSWV programme. These measures are designed to simplify the visa application process and motivate students to pursue quality studies, opening up more career opportunities in the country.

Ahead of the peak season for student visa applications, New Zealand authorities strongly advise students to apply at least three months before their planned trip. Those who have gathered all the necessary documents in advance are advised to apply as early as possible.

In addition, from 1 October 2024, the fees for student and post-study work visas will be significantly increased. These changes are intended to better cover the costs of processing visa applications and support New Zealand's economic recovery. Previously, the country's immigration system was heavily subsidised by taxpayers, but the updated visa fees will now more accurately reflect the costs of processing each type of visa.Visa exemption agreements with a number of countries will remain in place, while exemptions for refugees and victims of domestic violence will remain in place.
