New Zealand: new opportunities and simplified conditions for seasonal workers in 2025

For 2025, New Zealand is offering expanded seasonal work opportunities and improving conditions for workers under the Recognized Seasonal Employer (RSE) program.

The seasonal work visa is designed for professionals in high-demand industries such as horticulture, viticulture and tourism, providing a unique opportunity to live and work in the country temporarily. With an increase in the number of places available and simplification of requirements, this initiative will be a great chance for overseas workers looking to experience life in New Zealand and contribute to its economy.

One of the key changes was the increase in the number of places under the seasonal work visa program from 5,000 to 20,750. This reflects growing demand in high-growth sectors such as kiwi production and winemaking.

Employers must ensure workers work an average of 30 hours per week over a four-week period. If weather conditions reduce the availability of work, employers must supplement wages, ensuring financial stability even in difficult conditions.

Seasonal workers can now leave and re-enter New Zealand several times during the term of their visa. Employers can also adjust the cost of accommodation to balance affordability for workers and their costs. This adjustment applies to employment contracts signed on or after September 2, 2024.

Workers with three or more seasons of experience will earn at least N25.47 per hour to reflect their experience. New employees will be paid the standard minimum wage.

Workers can now change employers or regions with a 21-day grace period, this will allow them to adapt to changing circumstances and seek better opportunities.

Other significant changes include the elimination of certain health requirements, the ability to participate in training and skills development programs, and the addition of Timor Leste to the list of countries participating in the RSE program.

To apply for a seasonal work visa, you must find seasonal job openings, gather all required documents and apply online by March 31, 2025. This is a temporary initiative to address immediate labor needs.

Don't miss the opportunity to be part of the exciting world of seasonal work in New Zealand!
