The digital permit will enable remote workers to temporarily live and work in Kenya. The initiative aims to support tourism, boost the local economy and promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

President William Ruto highlighted the importance of the new visa-free policy adopted in Kenya this year and announced the launch of Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs) for transit passengers. These permits will allow travelers connecting in the capital to go beyond the airport and explore Nairobi.

A valid passport, proof of remote employment, residency and a criminal record certificate will be requiredto apply for a digital permit. Proof of sufficient annual income to live comfortably in Kenya will also be required.

The duration of the permit, its cost and launch date have not yet been specified. However, it is planned that the visa may enable long-term stay in the country and even citizenship.

Since January 2024, Kenya has simplified entry for travelers from a number of countries by offering a 90-day visa-free regime. Travelers must issue an ETA 72 hours prior to arrival. The document can be extended for another 90 days, allowing up to six months in the country.

Kenya is actively developing its tourism industry and attracting investment and skilled labor. About two million tourists visited the country in 2023 and the authorities aim to increase this figure to five million by 2027, an important step for economic growth.

Kenya is taking a bold step towards the future by opening its doors to a global community of digital nomads. This initiative promises to not only transform the country's economy, but also change the perception of Africa as a center of innovation and technological advancement.
