Japan plans to introduce six-month visas for digital nomads with an annual income of 10 million yen ($68,300) or higher. The program is expected to be launched by the end of March.

"Digital nomads" are people who work remotely and stay in one place only for a short or medium-term period. Citizens of 49 countries and territories will be able to stay in Japan on a digital nomad visa. Independent workers as well as salaried workers will have the opportunity to participate in the program. Eligible countries and territories are considered to be those with which Japan has tax and short-term visit waiver agreements. Such countries include, for example, the United States, Australia and Singapore.

The choice of the six-month period is based on a survey of digital nomads, most of whom said they would prefer to stay in Japan for longer than 90 days - the current duration of visa-free short-term stays - and up to six months. They would be allowed to work remotely from anywhere in the country without having an official workplace in Japan. Other requirements include having private health insurance. Spouses and children are also allowed to stay in Japan.

Citizens staying in Japan on a digital nomad visa will not be issued a card or certificate of residence, which gives access to certain government benefits. The visa cannot be extended, and will only be able to reapply 6 months after leaving the country.
