Visas/entry permits under new rule: mandatory online submission of Hong Kong visa applications from January
The Hong Kong Immigration Department has announced significant changes to the visa application process. This innovation reflects the Government's commitment to modernizing the immigration system and improving the quality of service for all citizens and residents applying for visas.
As of January 17, 2025, all applications for visas or entry and extension of stay permits will be required to be submitted exclusively in electronic format. This innovation covers several programs, including the general employment policy (also investment as entrepreneurs), the scheme for the admission of talents and professionals from Mainland China, the capital investment entry scheme, training, working vacation program and residence as dependents.
Under the new rules, personal filing, mailing or using application boxes will no longer be available. The move is aimed at simplifying the process, reducing waiting times and increasing transparency in the processing of applications.
Applicants will be able to complete the entire online application process, including filing, payment and e-visa, via a mobile app or the Hong Kong government's website. There will also be an option to upload additional documents and track the status of their applications.
While the move to e-services promises to improve convenience for users, it is not yet clear how it will affect processing times. Eligibility criteria and approval processes for existing visa programs will remain unchanged.
