UK updates eVisa: new biometric data of applicants to be included in the system
The UK has announced an important update to the eVisa system, effective April 17, 2024. Under the new rules, the updated eVisa system will include new biometric data of applicants. This decision aims to accelerate the transition to digital immigration for almost all visa holders by 2025.
Thus, UKVI credentials will be used instead of traditional documents such as biometric residence permits (BRPs) and visa stickers. This change will simplify the visa process and improve security by allowing applicants to access their e-visa through an online account.
The UK government has emphasized that those granted visas to stay in the Kingdom for more than six months for work or study purposes, along with Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cardholders, must create a UKVI online account to access their eVisa. For citizens who plan to enter the country for less than six months for tourism purposes, the creation of a UKVI account is not required.
All other aspects of the visa process remain unchanged and physical documents such as BRP cards will remain valid until the end of the year.
It's worth noting, the new system is free and easy to use. Existing BRP card holders should continue to use their documents until they expire and create UKVI accounts to access the e-visa.
