Visa-free countries and the new UK entry procedure from January: all about ETAs

Rock-A-Nore Beach, United Kingdom

From January 2025, a new rule will come into effect requiring travelers from the 48 countries eligible for visa-free entry to the UK to obtain an advance travel authorization (ETA) before their trip. This change affects both leisure and business travelers, as well as those planning to transit through the UK. UK residents and those with existing visas will not need to apply for an entry clearance (ETA).

ETA applications will be able to be made via the UK government's official website or mobile app. A valid passport, a digital photograph and basic travel information will be required. The average processing time for applications is 72 hours, but early submission is recommended.

The ETA permit will be valid for two years and will allow multiple entries into the country. Each traveler, including young children, will need to obtain an individual permit that can be issued on their behalf.

List of countries whose citizens will be required to issue ETAs beginning January 8, 2025:

Antigua and Barbuda
