Stockholm, Sweden

Sweden is actively working to create favorable conditions for highly qualified professionals and their families, which contributes to economic development and strengthens the country's position in the international arena. On January 1, 2025, updates to the EU Blue Card program came into effect, which significantly simplify the process of obtaining this document. The innovations make it more accessible and attractive for highly skilled workers, which in turn contributes to the flow of talent and innovation into the Swedish economy.

One of the key changes was the reduction of the minimum duration of the employment contract from 12 months to 6 months. This innovation will provide greater flexibility for both professionals and employers, allowing for faster adaptation to changing labor market conditions.

Sweden has also expanded the eligibility criteria: professionals with significant experience in their field can now apply for a Blue Card even if they have no formal academic qualifications.

In addition, the minimum salary to apply for the Blue Card will be lowered: starting in 2025, workers will be able to qualify for the card by earning only 1.25 times the average gross annual average wage, well below the current requirement of 1.5 times. This change will open the door to a broader group of highly skilled professionals.

An important innovation is the simplified process for changing jobs. Blue Card holders will now be able to change employer or profession without having to submit a new card application - just notify the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).

Blue Card holders from other EU countries will also benefit: they will be able to apply for a Swedish Blue Card under a simplified procedure if they have held their card for at least 12 months. Moreover, they will be able to work in Sweden for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without additional formalities.

Finally, Sweden has reduced the processing time for blue card applications from 90 days to 30 days, which will significantly speed up the work and residence permit process.
