German Foreign Ministry closes all three Iranian consulates
German authorities have decided to close three Iranian consulates as part of a tough retaliatory policy against Tehran's actions regarding violations of human rights and freedoms.
The move, according to the German Foreign Ministry, is a response to ongoing human rights violations in Iran. The closure of consulates in Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main will affect the work of consular offices, and could make it difficult for Iranian citizens living in Germany to obtain visas and other documents. However, the Iranian embassy in Berlin will remain in operation, albeit with restrictions.
The closure of consular offices is a forced and previously announced measure and involves limiting diplomatic privileges for Iranian consular staff in the country. It is noted that such a decision on the part of Germany will have consequences such as complication of relations between the countries and strengthening of control measures for citizens crossing the borders of Iran and Germany.
