Australia announces new migration strategy: visa for professionals with in-demand skills from December 7, 2024

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

In 2023, the Australian Government introduced an updated migration strategy that would introduce a new Skills in Demand visa. This visa, which will replace the existing Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, aims to address skills shortages and will provide more opportunities for both workers and employers.

According to information from the Home Office, the Skills in Demand visa will be available from December 7, 2024 and will be able to be issued for up to four years. This innovation will allow greater flexibility to respond to labor market needs and provide access to temporary skilled migration for 456 occupations.

An important element of the new visa system will be the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL), which will apply to the Skills in Demand visa. This list has been compiled through in-depth labor market analysis and consultation with Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) to better identify areas with the greatest skills shortages. It will include occupations from a variety of sectors including health, technology, engineering, construction and education.

In addition, the new migration system will aim to simplify the application process and create clearer pathways to permanent residence for migrants. This means that professionals who meet the criteria for in-demand skills will be able to integrate more quickly and easily into Australian society and economy.

Thus, the Australian government is taking steps to reform its migration policy, which should help attract highly skilled professionals and meet the needs of the Australian economy.
