Visas to Sri Lanka: everything you need to know

How to apply for a visa to Sri Lanka?

A passport and visa are required when entering Sri Lanka. Since 2012, for short visits (up to 30 days), tourists require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). We recommend that you apply for ETA online at our website before traveling. Visa on arrival is more expensive. If you do not have an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) with you, you may be refused entry.

There are three ways to obtain an entry authorization:

  • Online at the Sri Lankan government website
  • Upon arrival in Sri Lanka
  • In person at the embassy

Please note that electronic authorization can only be issued to passport holders whose passports are valid for more than 6 months (180 days) at the time of arrival. If the validity of the passport is less than 6 months, the tourist should obtain a new passport well in advance to avoid confusion at border crossings and travel disruption.

If you need to apply for a visa or ETA for Sri Lanka, we, as a professional visa agency, can take care of the application in English for you. You can order the visa/ETA for Sri Lanka you need directly on our website.

Want to stay in Sri Lanka for longer than 30 days? You can apply for a visa extension. Such an application is submitted in person at the visa office of the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration or online. You can be extended your visa for up to 270 days. This gives you a long term visa to Sri Lanka for almost a year.

How to get a visa to Sri Lanka if you are not traveling for vacation?

If you are not going on a vacation, transit or business trip, but are planning to visit Sri Lanka for another reason (e.g. to start work, study, etc.), you will need a classic visa for entry. An ETA (electronic travel authorization) is not suitable for entry.

Citizens of the Maldives, Seychelles and the Republic of Singapore are visa exempt. Visa-free stay for a limited period of time is also allowed for crew members of air and sea vessels. For official information on entry and residence in Sri Lanka, you can contact the Embassy of Sri Lanka.

Why should you contact us?
